Sustainable Rotomolding Overview
Denis Rodrigue
Université Laval
In this presentation, the basic concepts of sustainable development and circular economy will be reviewed in terms of materials selection. To improve the carbon footprint of rotomolded parts, three general options are currently available: 1) using bio-based resins instead of petro-based polymers, 2) add bio-based fillers into polymer matrices, 3) use recycled materials. These solutions can be applied alone or combined together. For each options, the advantages and limitations will be presented, discussed and compared with respect to processability and material limitations. Finally, specific examples will be presented in terms of applications, parts sizes/geometry as well as possibility to modify them (aesthetics, color, etc.).
